VULNERABLE LEARNERS:  “With Promise” not “At Risk”

Lori believes that we need to stop thinking about our most vulnerable learners as “at risk” and instead to start thinking of them as “with promise.” In this way, we can focus on meeting students where they are on the learning continuum and scaffolding them to higher levels of proficiency. In her session, Lori will share new ways of thinking about classroom structures to meet the needs of all the students in the class, with practical ideas for incorporating explicit literacy instruction into a joyful learning environment.

THE COMPREHENSION CONNECTION:  Fantastic Five Strategies

Comprehension isn’t just one of the pillars of reading; it’s the foundation of reading. Nothing else matters if you don’t have comprehension! In this session, we’ll look at best practices in teaching reading – and building a metacognitive foundation of five basic comprehension strategies.

Reading TO, WITH and BY Students

From read-alouds (I DO) to independent reading (YOU DO), each routine plays an important and unique role in reading development. We’ll look at classroom structures for each, with particular emphasis on the WE DO – shared and guided reading.

WRITING: ALL DAY, EVERY DAY

Research tells us that the most effective schools incorporate writing into every subject at every grade level all day long.  In this session, we’ll discuss the what, why and how of making “writing to learn” an important part of every day.
